To know Erika is to love Erika. If you know her, you probably know that she is moving confidently in the direction of her dream to become a physical therapist. (Heyyyyy, Dr. Porter!) She has to take several prerequisites before she can apply to the doctoral program at Tennessee State University. She has been taking classes through Portage Learning, and she’s killing it academically. She has 6 prerequisites left, and can apply to TSU this fall when she is down to 4. This would have her start her doctoral program in the summer of 2022.
Erika told me, dismayed, that Portage was no longer accepting payment plans, nor do they take federal student loans. She has to come up with $1,600 all at once for 2 classes. If she isn’t able to take them by the end of the summer, it will mean she has to wait another year to apply to her grad school program, and wouldn’t start until 2023. She has been working so hard to juggle her yoga work and day job while still making excellent grades in her prerequisite classes. What she’s been able to manage is amazing. Getting set back by a year is a huge blow to her progress. I started thinking that I can’t imagine with all of the people who love Erika, that we couldn’t pool our money together and handle this for her. Maybe we can pay for 1 class? Maybe we can pay for both classes? What would George do?
This pandemic has proven how fragile everything in our society is. If your financial situation was affected this year, I’m not asking for your money. If you’re one of the lucky ones who hasn’t suffered a great loss this year, then perhaps you can extend some help for Erika’s education. Even $10 adds up when several people chip in!
This isn’t really a reward-tier situation, but more an investment in a loved one.
