Erika was initially diagnosed with invasive Estrogen receptor (ER) positive stage II breast cancer April of 2022. She fought relentlessly through her chemo, radiation and chemo pill treatments. As a wife and mother of 3, she continued to care for her family while undergoing an aggressive treatment plan. After completing chemo and radiation we all thought the worst was behind her but after experiencing migraines and other symptoms she returned to the doctor, initially being turned away. She was persistent advocating for herself and they finally did a CT scan that came back abnormal. After doing further testing with an MRI they found the cancer had spread and there is multiple tumors in each lung and 3 in her brain. Another more specific MRI was done of her brain a week later revealing there were not only 3 tumors in her brain but 4. It is confirmed she has stage IV lung cancer. After seeing a new oncologist they determined she should have been treated as Triple Negative breast cancer (TNBC). The oncologist explained that could be very well why her cancer has metastisized and spread into her lungs and brain. Upon further investigating, her original oncologist knew she was borderline ER positive and TNBC but chose to treat her as ER positive (because she was young it was assumed it was hormonal) without her knowledge of it possibly being wrong. She was also made aware they should have done a PET scan and they chose to only do a mammogram and bone scan. Erika also opted to have a lumpectomy/lumpectomy reconstruction instead of a mastectomy. The plastic surgeon who was supposed to be one of the best did a botched job on her. She is currently awaiting results from additional testing but is expected to start radiation of her brain soon. As devastating as this news is to hear, she has refused to quit and has high spirits with an unmatched positive attitude. It is no surprise that these treatments are far from inexpensive; the weight of a continued financial battle only adds unnecessary stress for her and her family in this testing time. They are still dealing with the initial medical expenses that insurance failed to cover. She had happily accepted a position at her son's elementary school thinking it would be a great time to go back to work and help ease some of the financial burdens. Now she will be unable to continue working and need to focus again on getting through these treatments and must be tended to at home by family and friends while taking medication to reduce her brain swelling. We humbly ask for any donations in order to help this amazing woman and her family with expenses. 100% of donations earned will go directly to Erika and her family to help her get through this ongoing battle with cancer. Thank you for taking the time to read Erika's story and thank you for any donations you are able to give. Please keep her and her family in your prayers.
