I apologize for the long story, but I have a long story to tell. Over the past few years a series of serious medical issues has led me to this point. Most of the root of the problems began 20 years ago, when after an ankle fusion surgery I got a staph infection, which due to dr, neglect caused many complications in the future. Over the next 20 years I faced many surgeries and treatments to close the open wounds that never healed on the side of my foot.
I continued to have other health issues over the next years. At the age of 30, my life seemed to be coming together, I had recently gotten married and was working as a 3rd grade teacher, my life-long dream. After continuous health issues I was diagnosed with lupus-nephritis an auto-immune disease where the body attacks itself.
Over the years I had many stays at the hospital to treat the many complications of lupus. I was unable to work as a teacher anymore, something that caused me great heartbreak. However, I received great happiness when in 2007 I had my daughter. She is truly a miracle as she was born at 32 weeks, weighing 3lbs. 1 oz.. Ultimately lupus reared it's ugly head shortly after her birth I had a major flare and was hospitalized with clots in both my lungs and legs. After several weeks I overcame the issues and was able to return home with my daughter. Lupus complications was a constant issue over the next few years and in 2017 began a series of unimaginable health events. In Feb. 2017 I was working part-time as a registered behavior technician, working with autistic children, a job I truly enjoyed. I began to have trouble breathing and was forced to go to the hospital where I was told I had severe pnuemonia and put into a medically induced coma. I was placed into a special machine that rotated me around to keep the circulation through my body. While in the coma my kidneys began to fail and I was placed on dialysis. while in the coma I heard the dr. tell my family to prepare for the worst as they didn’t think I would make it. Upon hearing this I remember telling myself ”that he was wrong” ”he didn’t know who he was talking about and how strong a person I am”. I slowly came out of the coma and began to regain my strength and started to return to my ”normal” life.
Then in December of 2018 I developed a case of vasculitis in that sick left foot and I began to have excrutiating pain and my foot began to rot off. The decision was made to amputate my left foot. After surgery the pain began to increase again, the skin seperated from the stitches and I developed areas of black necrosis. It was decided that I needed to go back into surgery to have the large areas of necrosis and restitch the wound. After that surgery I really started to deteriorate, and I had several other complications. My leg ontinued to have the same problems with healing and I needed yet another surgery.. Shortly after I was transferred to Ohio State where I continued to deteriorate. My family was once again told to prepare for the worst as I had a brain bleed and needed a feeding tube to survive. I was then put into hospice where I began to improve as I was taken off many medications I was given in the hospital. However, I was still told that I was dying and had about 6 months to live. Once again I told myself that I'm stronger than they think I am and I will fight this as I will not leave my daughter without a mother. I continued to improve when I was able to return home. My family and I knew that I wasn't dying and once again I would fight back. I signed myself out of hospice so I could receive my prosthetic leg and continue to regain my health. Everything was returning to normal and I was walking on my new leg, until yet another traumatic setback.
On Monday November 19, 2018, my daughter and I were taking our cat to the vet when I was involved in a major car accident. Thankfully my daughter was unharmed, but I received a major lacerationon on my arm requiring 39 stitches and I broke both bones in my right (good) leg. This required surgery to place plates and pins to support the break. This has left me completely unable to do anything as I cannot put any weight on my limbs. Once again I am posed with unimaginable challenges and setbacks as well as more medical expenses.
I know I will fight this battle as hard as the many other battles I have been presented with. i ask that you please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I continue to fight this battle and continue to heal. Thank you.
