My cousin, Erica Smith, is still fighting her battle with stage 4 liver cancer. She's remained optimistic through many ups and downs in her journey, fighting her way through many rounds of chemo and very difficult treatments that have left her exhausted and dealing with non-stop side effects. She has had to cut back on working, and this has made it more difficult for her to keep up with her children's school events and activities. Despite all this, she still finds the time and strength when she can to be present with her family.

Recently, a very promising treatment option came to our attention through Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Histotripsy is a non-invasive option that can help destroy the tumors without the high risks of surgery or more aggressive medications that her body may be unable to handle at this point. Her insurance is likely to pay for the treatment itself, but they won't pay for the initial consultations, imaging, lab work, follow up care, and travel. A hefty $2,000 bill has already come in just for the first consultation and costs are expected to pile up quickly as the process goes on.
