My name is Eric Scutaro . I am a Venezuelan choreographer, dance performer, activist, and refugee living in Birmingham.
For many years, I have used dance, performance, and community work to support LGBTQ+ people, refugees, migrants, artists, and young people — first in Venezuela, and now here in the UK. Birmingham has become a place where I have been able to rebuild my life, share my art, and continue fighting for visibility, dignity, and joy.
This year, I am preparing for the next important step in my journey: applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain this year, and then, applying for British citizenship next year. This would give me more stability, safety, and the chance to keep building my life and my work here with more security.
As a refugee, settling in the UK has been emotionally and financially difficult. I have worked hard to support my community, but the costs of legal advice, paperwork, applications, courses, moving, and everyday life have become overwhelming. Recently, I have had to move from living alone in a flat into a spare room because I can no longer afford the costs, and I am currently carrying debts.
I am asking for support to help me cover:
- Immigration and citizenship-related costs
- Solicitor/legal advice
- Required documents and paperwork
- Courses and preparation
- Moving and settling costs
- Debts created during this difficult transition
I am aiming to raise £5,000 to support the next step of my journey—securing stability, safety, and a future in the UK. These funds will go towards citizenship fees, legal support, essential requirements, and the basic costs of rebuilding my life during a very challenging time.
This campaign is not only about paperwork. It is about safety, belonging, and the possibility of continuing to rise.
As part of this fundraiser, I am also planning a community performance event inspired by the Phoenix, my Magic Bird of Fire, and the idea of rebirth. I want to bring together friends, performers, artists, and community members to celebrate resilience, queer joy, and collective care while raising funds for this next chapter.
Like the phoenix, I have had to rise from fire many times. From Venezuela to Birmingham, from displacement to rebuilding, from survival to creativity — my story has always been about transformation.
Any donation, no matter how small, will help me move closer to stability and citizenship. If you cannot donate, sharing this campaign would also mean so much.
Thank you for believing in me, supporting my journey, and helping me continue to create, dance, and serve my community.
With love and gratitude,
Eric
