Hi,
My name is Monica and I have been a Days for Girls mentor to Alice Wambui since 2017. Alice has been amazing to work with because of her passion, dedication and commitment. She is hard worker and knows how to get things done. She is motivated by her own experience as a young girl who was shamed and humiliated in front of other classmates by her teacher, when she had to stand up in front of the class with her blood-stained school uniform. She wants all girls to thrive in school without the fear of shame and humiliation associated with menstruation. I think we can all agree this is a great cause!
Alice has once again partnered with Madam Leah, the Government Chief in Nakuru County, Kenya. Madam Leah is again offering to purchase 2000 Smart Starter menstrual hygiene kits if Smile Star’D Days for Girls Enterprise is able to do the same. The Smart Starter Kits cost $6.00 US each.
Because of a generous corporate sponsorship, we have the opportunity to have all donations doubly matched! Which means for each $6 kit purchased, 2 more will be distributed!! So if we raise $5000 in donations, we will actually get $15,000 after the match! Amazing, right? We are so grateful!
The funds that exceed the amount needed to provide the 2000 Smart Starter kits for the project with Madam Leah will be used to make and distribute kits to girls and women living at the dump site in Nakuru and also to some of the girls and women classified by the United Nations as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nakuru County. These are people who have lost their homes due to tribal clashes, drought, flooding, and family conflicts. There are currently over 400,000 in Nakuru County alone.
The need for access to menstrual hygiene products is great! With your help we can make a difference in the lives of women and girls living in abject poverty.
Along with vital health education, our beautiful and washable pads are distributed free of charge, thanks to your donations. Your donations also support the women and men who manufacture the kits at the Smile Star’D enterprise, giving them meaningful work that helps them provide for their own families.
Menstrual health management is a matter of human rights, and a critical component to achieving gender equity. Our goal is to shatter the stigma of menstruation and restore dignity to girls, which allows them to stay in school without shame or embarrassment. Although our primary demographic includes girls currently attending school. We also reach out to the women who support these girls and to those who are marginalized and cannot attend school for economic reasons.
Thank you so very much for helping to support this GoFundMe campaign!
