Local agriculture in Israel as anywhere else is the backbone of local food security. While COVID-19 lockdowns are slowly being eased, for many communities, providing food to people has been very difficult, further exacerbating food-related diseases such as obesity, cancer and diabetes and pushing more people into undernutrition. Prior to the outbreak, 20% of all households in Israel were estimated to be food insecure. The COVID-19 outbreak has exacerbated this dire situation even further.
The Israeli Forum for Sustainable Nutrition (IFSN, https://english.ifsn.org.il/) is an advocacy group comprised of professional dietitians, environmentalists, and agronomists. The IFSN's ultimate goal is to create a fully sustainable and resilient food system in Israel so that all citizens have access to fresh and healthy food. During this current pandemic, they are working tirelessly on both immediate and longer term policies to address critical issues of food insecurity in light of COVID-19. The forum is also providing continued support to a number of projects on the ground, including an educational garden near Tel Aviv that recently transformed into a food hub to supply needy families in the wake of the pandemic.
I started this GoFundMe campaign to support the IFSN as an organization, helping with the daily cost of operations to create important policy changes and promote influential projects to support Israelis in need during this pandemic. A portion of the funds will directly support projects on the ground, including the garden that is serving families in need during this critical time. Please join me in supporting their mission to make Israel more food secure!
