HELP END HOMELESSNESS for Aviendha Goodrich!
Donation protected
This past month, one of my dearest friends Aviendha fell into unfortunate and heartbreaking circumstances that led to her becoming homeless. Aviendha had been supporting herself in Maryland, but lost her job and has had difficulty finding another due to COVID. Her mother is deceased and the rest of her family is unable to provide a support system to keep a roof over her head. She was staying with an acquaintance who had offered support, but that person turned out to be predatory and involved in criminal activity; when Aviendha attempted to involve the authorities, she was thrown onto the street without her belongings and subjected to threats against her life.
Without sharing her personal experiences, I just want to express that Aviendha has endured some truly harrowing experiences, neglect and trauma while being homeless this past month. I want to express that Aviendha is not involved in substance abuse and her homelessness is entirely due to unfortunate circumstances and lack of a support system. It is of the utmost urgency to those who love her that we get Aviendha into stable housing for the next 60 days. Having housing and a home address will provide the foundation that she needs to get government aid, another job, and the professional support that she needs for her mental health. From personal experience, I know that being homeless is almost impossible to recover from without a stable place to stay in the interim. If my good family friends had not taken me in while I was homeless in high school, I would not have been able to focus on getting a scholarship to college and reaching the financial security that I now possess.
Therefore, I am working to build a support network for Aviendha, and raise enough money for at least 60 days of rent. Once we raise enough funds, I am going to co-sign a temporary 2-month lease with Aviendha, hopefully within this week. After this goal, any additional funds will go towards extending Aviendha's housing and providing her resources to become self-sufficient. For sustainable next steps beyond housing, we have a plan in place to secure Aviendha food stamps, aid, therapy and a job so she can get back on her feet as soon as possible.
ANY SUPPORT IS HELPFUL, even if it is only $10 or $20. I am contributing as much as I can, but as a PhD student my income is not sufficient to help my friend on my own. If you are able, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help in any way that you can. I love Aviendha so much and it breaks my heart to see her without a roof over her head in another state. It would mean the world to me and to her if you contribute to her future stability and safety. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.
