My name is Emmanuel de Leon Jr, an international student currently studying at the University of Notre Dame in the sacred music program.
I am in my third year living in South Bend, Indiana and assisting St. Matthew Cathedral as part of my assistantship. I was Notre Dame's Conducting Fellow for the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, 2021-2022.
I got accepted as a conducting fellow for the Sarteano Chamber Choral Conducting Workshop/Masterclass this coming July 27 - August 5. It is a highly competitive application since applicants come from different countries. I was very lucky to be selected and to represent Notre Dame and to its extent, the US, even if I am a Filipino by citizenship.
The advanced conducting workshop/masterclass where I will take part will be handled by one of the founding members of the world-renowned King's Singers and Yale University professor emeritus, Dr. Simon Carrington. I've been looking forward to working and studying under Prof. Carrington all these years. I was supposed to have that opportunity in 2020 when I got accepted as conducting fellow for the Norfolk Summer Chamber Choir Conducting Masterclass at Yale University but it was unfortunately canceled due to the widespread pandemic.
After having been accepted for this masterclass in Sarteano, Italy, my barrier in participating is lack of funds. I applied for a grant to one of ND's grant institutions for graduate students but due to the volume of travel grants, my application was denied. This dream of representing the USA in a masterclass of this caliber and getting more education is starting to diminish.
I am truly grateful for your kind generosity in supporting me in my quest for further education to improve my craft. I will continue to work on being my best in musical arts, for everyone to enjoy.
Maraming salamat, po.
Thank you very much.
