Help Emma get a Diabetic Alert Dog

Donation protected

Hi, my name is Emma I am fundraising for the hope of getting a Diabetic Alert Dog (DAD). Even though I wasn't diagnosed with type one diabetes until I was 20 years old, I was in and out of the hospital as a child due to a rare metabolic disorder that makes me prone to low blood sugar called MCADD. Not only do I have low blood sugar, but due to diabetes I also have high blood sugar.

At a young age, I was well aware of what having my finger pricked felt like. I knew that I would have to tell the other kids why I had a medical ID bracelet on. I knew that I would have to explain why I am allowed to have a snack when others couldn't eat during class. I knew that I wasn't allowed outside for recess if the temperature was over 90 degrees. Which meant sitting inside with one friend and playing cards. I knew throwing up meant another trip to the hospital. Walking up and down the hallways of the hospital memorizing every room. Missing school to take trips to Boston to get poke with sharps to get blood tests done. Passing out after seeing the needle.

Jump to years later, back in the hospital. Being poked and probed, being asked the same questions over and over again. After being admitted to the ER where I waited for hours with my parents we were informed that I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes. My life changed in a moment. My mom started to cry, she had been through this before with her father who died due to type one. We were then quickly moved into a room where I spent three days of no sleep being injected with insulin and pricked continuously throughout the nights and days. After those three life-changing days I just wanted to go home and take a hot shower, get back to normal, but no my mom and I are sent to a doctor to take a crash course on diabetes.

Here we are four years after being diagnosed with type one I am done with injections and finger sticks. I have a pump and a Dexcom. You may be thinking then why do you need a DAD? Even with the advancements in technology, I still need help. There have been times when I have fallen asleep and was unable to wake up due to a blood sugar of 30. My sister finally woke me up after hearing the alarm go off on my phone. There have been times when I was out on a walk and my legs just gave out. My blood sugar had dropped so much I had to have my mom come get me. I couldn't make it home. Luckily I still live with my family at the moment but what do I do when I leave home? Nobody is going to be there to help me or get help when I need it most. So why do I need a DAD? The reason is simple. I am prone to low blood sugar making it more likely that I will pass out with low blood sugar. Getting a DAD would give my family and me peace of mind, knowing that someone is with me to help.
