My name is Emily, and right now my family and I are facing one of the toughest times of our lives. Until recently, we were living in a shelter, but our time there came to an end. It’s just me, my 4-year-old, my 11-month-old, and my newborn twins—who are both in the NICU after I had an emergency c-section at just 26 weeks pregnant. The doctors had to deliver early because one of the babies’ placentas was detaching, and now both of my twins will need to stay in the hospital until their original due date in August.

Since leaving the shelter, I’ve been doing everything I can to keep a roof over our heads. The motel we’re staying at has been kind enough to work with me on the weekly rate, but with my recovery from surgery and the complications I experienced, I’m unable to work right now. Every week, I worry about how I’ll cover rent and keep my family safe and together while I visit my twins in the NICU and care for my other little ones.
