Help Emily Stay in School and Secure Safe Housing

Hi, my name is Emily Giddens, and I am a college student working toward my goal of becoming a therapist. I am currently studying psychology and hope to earn my master’s degree so I can help others through therapy or sports psychology.
I am considered an independent student with no family financial support. My childhood was unstable I was first taken in by my grandmother until the age of 5 years old, after my biological mother was deemed unable to care for me and my siblings. After my grandmother passed away I was raised by a family friend guardian, where I experienced abuse for many years. Later, when I reunited with family members, the instability and emotional hardship continued. Despite these challenges, I worked hard to make it to college because education represents a path toward stability and a better future.
As a new student living away from home, my vulnerability and isolation made me susceptible to unhealthy environments. During my first semester, I became involved in an organization by the name of the ICC, where I initially felt a strong sense of belonging. Over time, I recognized unhealthy patterns of control and manipulation to which I was not given the autonomy to leave but rather kicked out by one of the leaders.
I chose to attend Sacramento State not only to pursue my education but also to create a safer and more stable life. I was blessed with the opportunity to try out for the track team after the school had not held tryouts in years. Being selected as a walk-on athlete allowed me to continue the sport I love, and after competing at conference finals, I earned eligibility for a scholarship that helps cover tuition and books. Alongside my scholarship I am also working as a student assistance for the Sac State athletic working as many hours as I can in between the track schedule.
Unfortunately, I am now facing a financial emergency. I have already taken out the maximum student loans available to me, but I still owe $620 in tuition. In addition, on-campus housing costs over $13,000 per year, which is no longer financially possible for me to afford.
To remain in school, I need to move off campus and raise $2,000 for a housing deposit and move-in costs, along with the remaining tuition balance.
Since coming to college, I have been completely financially independent and have exhausted all available options. I am asking for help so I can stay in school and maintain stable and safe housing option while continuing my education.
My Goal: $3,000
Funds will go toward:
• Remaining tuition balance: $620
• Off-campus housing deposit and move-in costs: $2,000+
• Basic living expenses during the transition
Any donation, no matter the amount, will make a meaningful difference in helping me continue my education and move toward a stable future.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for supporting my journey.
