Why does Emily need retinopathy surgery?

As a result of premature birth, Emily was born with a detached retina amongst other physical conditions which she has bravely recovered from.

Moreover, her retina did not develop normally and detached. The retina is the “film” at the back of the eye that lets us see. Emily is currently legally blind. Most urgent now, is keeping Emily’s current ability to see light which will decline and fade without the surgery.

Surgery will keep the eye as healthy as possible. Without this surgery her eyesight will go to total darkness, her eyes will shrink which will cause her to suffer delayed neurological and motor development, pain, as well as major lifelong impacts on education and quality of life.

The surgery will help Emily see light or shapes. It will also preserve her eye’s shape correct physiology, and future fitting of a prosthetic if needed. Without surgery, her eyes will become smaller, and will eventually be lost. She would also lose her ability to tell night from day causing her constant irritability complicate her growth, and impede her learning. With surgery and follow-up, doctors will improve her quality of life, and give her the best possible chance for any vision.

Como resultado de un nacimiento prematuro, Emily nació con un desprendimiento de retina, además de otras condiciones físicas de las que se ha recuperado con valentía. Sin embargo, su retina no se desarrolló normalmente y se desprendió. La retina es como la “película” en la parte posterior del ojo que nos permite ver. Actualmente, Emily es legalmente ciega. Lo más urgente ahora es conservar su capacidad actual de percibir la luz, la cual desaparecerá sin la cirugía.

La cirugía mantendrá su ojo lo más sano posible. Sin esta operación, su vista llegará a la oscuridad total; sus ojos se encogerán, lo que le provocará retraso en su desarrollo neurológico y motor, dolor, además de graves consecuencias de por vida en su educación y calidad de vida.

La cirugía ayudará a Emily a distinguir la luz o las formas. También preservará la forma y fisiología correcta de su ojo, así como la posibilidad de colocarle una prótesis en el futuro, si fuera necesario. Sin cirugía, sus ojos se harán más pequeños y eventualmente se perderán. También perdería la capacidad de diferenciar el día de la noche, lo que le causaría irritabilidad constante, complicaría su crecimiento e impediría su aprendizaje.

Con la cirugía y el seguimiento médico, los doctores podrán mejorar su calidad de vida y darle la mejor oportunidad posible de conservar algo de visión.
