Emily has recently been diagnosed with Keratoconus, a serious condition in which the clear tissue on the front of the eye (cornea) bulges outward, distorts vision and causes sensitivity. Emily has a rare case, it is highly unusual to be diagnosed at her young age and she was informed that it is present in both of her eyes. If not treated right away, it could cause life long damage. In its earliest stages, keratoconus causes slight blurring and distortion of vision and increased sensitivity to glare and light. These symptoms usually appear in the late teens or late 20s. EMILY IS ONLY EIGHT! Her age is what makes her case rare. The process of finding a Dr that would even see her at her age was a challenge. Luckily a Dr. in Miami is willing to help her save her sight.
Each eye may be affected differently. As keratoconus progresses, the cornea bulges more and vision may become more distorted. In a small number of cases, the cornea will swell and cause a sudden and significant decrease in vision. The swelling occurs when the strain of the cornea's protruding cone-like shape causes a tiny crack to develop. The swelling may last for weeks or months as the crack heals and is gradually replaced by scar tissue. If this sudden swelling does occur, your doctor can prescribe eyedrops for temporary relief, but there are no medicines that can prevent the disorder from progressing.
This vision saving procedure needs to happen ASAP.
The procedure is Epi-on corneal cross-linking. She is at the stage where one eye is need of surgery very soon, the other eye is in the early stages. This procedure is a less invasive procedure than typically used and is not yet covered by the FDA, leaving her absolutely necessary procedure uncovered by insurance.
Please join me in supporting Emily and her very concerned family. My goal is to soften the blow and to make the finances a non issue so that Brittany and Ken can focus on Emily’s well being and not on the expenses.
Emily has a whole to see and a lifetime left to see it. Let’s make sure she gets the chance that she deserves.
