Help Emily get to her artist residency in Lisbon!

Hello!

I'm Emily! My 31st birthday is around the corner, and as a birthday gift, I am asking for help getting to an artist residency in Lisbon, Portugal.

Those close to me know that in recent years I have become slightly obsessed with the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake, King Joseph I of Portugal, Queen Maria I of Portugal, and the various other related historical figures who were active in that time. While I was still attending my undergraduate studies at the University of Memphis, I even gave a presentation about the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake and the political, social, and economic implications of the event itself.

At any rate, I found an opportunity for an artist residency at a small artist-run gallery called Zaratan in Lisbon. I applied, and much to my surprise and delight, out of over 800 applications from 32 countries, my proposal was one of just 30 accepted in! My proposal revolved around the research and development of a project relating to the 1755 earthquake, and the various political figures who were prominent at the time. Since my acceptance, I have even begun studying Portuguese and meeting with a tutor weekly to practice speaking.

The residency itself involves me staying onsite at the gallery from December 1 - December 31, 2024, attending weekly meetings, planning/performing concerts, and participating in an end-of-residency exhibition with the other artists in the space. In addition to that, the rest of my time will be spent working on new art and collaborating with other artists.

The lodging fee for the residency equals $1,473 for the month. I am hoping to raise this amount via this birthday GoFundMe from friends and family. Anything beyond that amount would go towards the cost of flights.
