Emily Collette Torres Palacios is a five-year-old girl living in El Salvador. Like many little girls, she is active and curious, loves pizza and strawberry ice cream, puzzles and Lego, mermaids and her family. She is empathetic and loving; her father Mauricio says proudly that when he gets home from work, she runs to get his slippers and helps take off his shoes. But unlike most little girls, Emily has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia and is now fighting for her life. Her aunt, Norma Torres, is my coworker in Los Angeles and has always sent money home to help support her family, but Emily’s needs are now greatly outpacing what Norma and Emily’s parents can provide.

Emily has undergone one round of chemotherapy, but recurrent fevers and infections have kept her in the hospital and unable to continue treatment. While most medical expenses in the hospital are covered, bills are mounting in many other areas, especially since Emily’s mother, Cindy, has had to stop working to care for her. Her father works in motorcycle tourism earning a modest income, and his pay is coming to an end during the upcoming rainy season. In order for Emily to be allowed to leave the hospital, even to recuperate at home to build strength for her next treatments, she must have a climate-controlled room. Her family lives in a one-room building, so they have to build a properly enclosed space and install air conditioning and filtration. This is an expense they cannot afford, so Emily and her mother remain in the hospital while her 11-year-old sister Valeria and her father remain at home, which is taking a toll on everyone.

Donations to this fundraiser will help cover the costs of building a safe room for Emily, as well as food, rent, utilities, transportation, and other daily expenses. Since El Salvador isn’t a supported country for withdrawals, I will withdraw the funds and hand-deliver them to Norma for Emily’s care.
