Hi everyone, I am posting this in hopes to support my girlfriend in this scary part of her life. On Tuesday August 6th, she found out that her father had Covid. She rushed into action to cook, clean, and care for his dogs so he could focus on getting better. She planned to visit and care for him on Wednesday but hadn’t heard from him in hours. She immediately assumed the worst so she went and checked on him. Her father had fallen and was on the ground for over 2 hours. He was too weak to get himself back up and the Covid was hitting him real hard. She had medics bring him to the ER to be assessed. They transported him to St. Clare in Lakewood.
At St. Clare, they took hours to get an IV in him, they did not run any tests on him, he never saw a doctor, they wouldn’t allow either Emily or her father to see a social worker, and when he asked for a throat lozenge, they forced him to walk by himself in order to “earn it”. Once she found out about this, she stormed in there and got him out as soon as she could. She requested a social worker and a diagnosis but they provided neither to her. They claimed he was able to walk alone and could go home and be fine. She could tell his health had already deteriorated more since she saw him last. She made the decision, against Saint Clare’s recommendation, to bring him to the ER at St Anthony’s.
Only a few hours after being at St. Anthony’s, they decided to admit him into the ICU due to his deteriorating condition. He was barely breathing while on 10 units of oxygen. He was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia as well as Covid. This was all a huge concern especially because he is in the high risk category for Covid being that he is senior and diabetic. He was unable to swallow and was nearly drowning on the fluid in his lungs. He stayed in the ICU for a couple of days while they performed life saving measures.
My girlfriend, Emily, has stayed so strong through all of this. I have watched her crumble to the ground and get right back up to help wherever she can. There were a few days when we weren’t sure what the outcome of this would all be. But finally a couple of days ago Larry, her dad, was brought to regular hospital care and just yesterday she brought him to rehab.
During all of this she has been caring for his 2 dogs, doing his laundry, cooking and cleaning for him, and packing his old living situation up. She has been given power of attorney and has decided he will most likely be on the path to assisted living once he is strong enough. Watching her deal with this has been heart wrenching but it shows her true character. She dropped everything to save his life. She has been told by medical professionals that if it weren’t for her, he wouldn’t have made it. She feels responsible to care for him with all that he needs now and going forward. She has taken time off of work and is applying for PFML but it takes time to process.
My hope for this GoFundMe is to show her how many people care and support her and her dad. I want her to be able to take all the time she needs to focus on him and his care and not worry about and financial stress. Any contribution helps, even a kind message goes a long ways. Thank you so much!
