In mid-October, my niece Emily Tate Cornwell and her husband Ryan learned that their unborn baby boy has spina bifida, a serious condition that involves an opening/exposure in the baby's spine. The good news is that they are traveling on November 19th to Children's Memorial Hospital in Houston for fetoscopic, in-utero surgery to repair the exposed spine to minimize the possible life-altering effects. The hope is that after the surgery, the baby will continue to grow until his due date, and his spine will heal with minimal damage. Most details of the next few months are undetermined...Emily will have to stay in Houston for at least three weeks after the surgery, and travel after that is possible, but not certain. She may have to remain in Houston until the baby is born (her due date is in March), so in addition to medical costs, lots of logistical dilemmas will arise from this surgery for the next several months, including travel back and forth, their ability to work, and care for their other three children (all ages four and under).
