Emi Broke Both Arms!

Her Second Break - March 2021
My sweet little Emi broke her other arm a week ago. She was eating her breakfast next to me and tried to sneak attack jump into my lap and unfortunately missed. She fractured her radius and ulna and had to have a plate put in. She's on the long road to recovery and can't wait to get back outside again!

Her First Break - January 2021
When I first saw Emi I knew she was the one for me. Before New Year's Eve, I was lucky enough to be chosen as her adopter by the rescue that had saved her. I was beyond excited! I bought all the things I thought a puppy would need (and then some) and was prepared to have her come home. On Monday, January 18th I met the new member of my family - sweet little Emi! I fell in love the instant I saw her. She was shy at first but quickly warmed up. We brought her home and she immediately started showing her personality: smart, sweet, and a little bit sassy. We had a fun first day together and were off to a great start.
The next morning, when I took Emi out to pee something unexpected and horrible happened. I set her down in the grass and within 30 seconds she was yelping! I quickly picked her up to console her, but it didn't help. I thought maybe she was cold or scared, so we moved to another spot. As soon as I went to put her down again, I noticed she was lifting her left paw.
My heart sunk.
I knew right then that something had gone horribly wrong. What had happened to my sweet little puppy? We were just doing a routine potty break, how could she possibly be hurt? I know I didn't drop her or step on her. Did she step on something? I quickly took her upstairs and called the vet.
I'm supposed to protect this small creature, and I failed her.
The next few days were a whirlwind of x-rays, phone calls, messages, and bad news: Emi had fractured her elbow. The vet called and said she needed to consult with an orthopedic surgeon due to where the fracture was located. Two days later, Emi was in an emergency surgery center having a pin and a screw put in place to fix her fracture.
Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that my brand new puppy, the new member of my family that I waited for, searched for, and hoped for for so long, would have to have emergency surgery. This puppy should be playing, learning the ropes, having fun, running around, etc. Now she has to be crate bound, take 3 medications a day, and has to undergo physical therapy.
It felt like I had let her down.
When she got home, I vowed to her that I would do whatever it took to help her heal. And that's exactly what I am doing.
It's been about a week since her surgery and every day she is doing better than the day before. She is starting to slowly walk on her injured leg and seems to be healing quickly. Even though her play is limited, she still has the energy and appetite of a growing puppy. She loves to snuggle and is happiest when she's in a lap.
Because of where the fracture was located, emergency surgery was necessary, and emergency surgery and vet visits are expensive. All of the funds raised here will go to help pay for those expenses. Her surgery bill was over $3,500! If any additional money is raised, I will be donating it to help cover the vet bills of other pets at the local rescues here. The rescue that allowed me to adopt Emi has been so helpful, and I would like to be able to give back in some way.
Emi and I are grateful for whatever amount you can donate, and I am grateful that you took the time to read this. Even though I have only known her a short time, I love Emi and want her to be happy and healthy.

With love and gratitude,
Danika and Emi
