It is with a heavy heart, but also a fierce determination, that I share an update regarding my son, Emiliano. We are currently preparing for a series of three major, life-changing surgeries that will take place over the next year and a half. This journey will require us to travel back and forth to Texas for specialized hospital care and multiple out-of-state recoveries.

This journey has been an uphill battle. While we have insurance, the surgeons within our network lack the specific expertise required for Emi’s rare condition. After months of advocacy, I was presented with a 50-60% complication rate from the available providers. As a mother, that was a risk I simply could not accept for my son’s future.

I took matters into my own hands, researching until I found the best possible specialist for Emi’s case. This surgeon in Texas focuses solely on Emi’s specific condition and has an outstanding track record. Knowing we have the right expert to perform this three-stage surgical process—with one surgery occurring every six months—is the only way we can ensure Emi has the best possible outcome. Choosing the best care has come with significant obstacles. Our insurance has made it extremely difficult to cover these out-of-network procedures. However, Emi cannot wait. I have decided to move forward with the Texas team, even though it means taking on a massive financial burden upwards of $60k of out of pocket expenses. Because this is a long-term commitment involving medical bills, three separate round-trips to Texas, and weeks of lodging for each recovery period, we are facing a challenging road ahead.
