Help Emerson get to Columbia!

Donation protected
Hello everyone-I am overjoyed to announce that I am one of six directors selected to complete an MFA at a Columbia University under the tutelage of the legendary directors Anne Bogart and Brian Kulick. Words can’t describe what a dream come true this is-I remember scrolling through the info page at Columbia when I was in high school daydreaming about what it would be like to apply, but clicking away thinking there is no way I would ever be able to go. Fast forward a decade…and here I am!

For those not in theatre or opera: this program is a huge deal! Going here means the opportunity to train with some of the most influential voices in theatre and opera today, top of the line training, and the chance to work alongside fellow directors from around the world. Alumni have gone to direct at Broadway, the Royal Opera House, and have become some of the premiere teachers of directing at universities across the nation. The training I would receive is some of the most rigorous in the industry, prioritizing practical experience and gettin your hands dirty.

That being said, a surprise move to New York City is not the cheapest (and Columbia isn’t either). I’m raising money to help fund moving costs, room and board, and other school related expenses such as materials. I hope you’ll feel moved as to donate: any amount is a huge help to me achieving my dreams.

One other thing: my ability to succeed in the arts has been facilitated by a community of passionate teachers and artists who fought to make it happen for me. People who gave me rides when I couldn’t drive, discounted lessons rates when I couldn’t afford it, helped me apply for scholarships, and who had the faith in me even when I lacked the same faith in myself. Still, not every student in our community were afforded the same privileges. I remember many who had to quit extracurriculars in order to work jobs to support their family. As a result, many of the arts opportunities I had just 10 years ago are either gone or disappearing.

I’d like to dedicate 10% of whatever I earn from this fundraiser to create a fund for Zanesville or Tri-Valley high school students to fund their arts educations while in school. The fund could be used for art supplies, music lessons, camps, or even just gas money to make it to out of town opportunities. I believe art is a fundamental human need, as I move onto to other opportunities I want to help my community have access to the same privileges I did.

If you’ve read this far-thank you for reading, thank you for your support, thank you for your time. To more art!
