Em has always been the kind of person who puts others first. For over a decade, they have been a leader, organizer, and advocate for our community, all while battling chronic illnesses. Most recently, Em has been tirelessly coordinating mutual aid while bedbound, in the wake of the January 2025 fires and the currently ongoing kidnappings in LA and nationwide. Their compassion and dedication has inspired me and countless others to become more involved in community activism.
Em faces a complex set of chronic health challenges, including cervical cancer, severe endometriosis, scoliosis and spondylosis, POTS (a heart condition that makes it hard to walk or stand), EDS (joint instability), and MCAS (severe allergic reactions daily). They also suffer from TSW (topical steroid withdrawal), a condition caused by medical malpractice in childhood. Starting 9 years ago, their health began to decline further, when a mold exposure due to an abusive and negligent landlord triggered full-body inflammation and a debilitating systemic reaction. They have been bedbound for the last 7 years because of it.
Recently, Em's health has taken a severe downturn. Their health has declined so much that they now urgently need in-home care, and cannot put off medical care any longer. After years of fighting for access, they were finally approved for two immune treatments—Xolair and IVIG—that could change their life. However, the costs are staggering: the treatments and health insurance premiums will cost them nearly $20k per month, and none of the specialists who can provide these treatments accept Medi-Cal. Em is struggling to keep up with these relentless expenses.
Despite these overwhelming obstacles and medical trauma, Em remains the gentlest, kindest, and most giving person I know. They are reaching the end of their rope, both physically and mentally, and need our community now more than ever. Any form of support, like making a donation or sharing their story, will help Em access the life-saving treatments and care they desperately need. Your kindness can help my friend and community leader regain their footing and find hope after so many years of relentless struggle.
