Help Rebuild Lives After Hurricane Melissa in Lethe, Jamaica
We are the owners and the Deya-So Vacation Services management team of Elysian Retreat in Lethe, St. James, Jamaica.
Before the recent hurricane, our Retreat proudly employed members of the Lethe community as part of our mission to ensure that Elysian is fully rooted in and supported by local people. Over time, we’ve built close bonds with our staff and their families — they are the heart of the Retreat.
Unfortunately, Hurricane Melissa (Category 5) devastated western Jamaica, including Lethe. Many of our team members suffered severe losses:
- Shando (Chef) — lost his roof and, in trying to save what he could, broke his leg and arm. With roads closed, he was unable to reach a hospital for over 36 hours. He received only basic first aid and is still awaiting surgery.
- Omar (Groundskeeper) — lost his roof and much of his household belongings.
- Richard (Property Manager) and his family — lost part of their roof and sustained heavy water damage.
- Christina (Housekeeper) — lost her roof and nearly all her possessions.
Like most Jamaicans, they do not have property insurance — nearly 80% of households are uninsured. These families have lost almost everything. To make matters worse, they are without income while the Retreat undergoes repairs from flooding damage, which will take several months.
This fundraiser will go directly to support our staff and their families as they rebuild their homes and lives.
No funds will be used for the Retreat itself, as it is fully insured. Every contribution will have a direct impact on multiple families and the wider Lethe community.
We invite you to stand with us and help them recover from this devastating storm.
Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference.
Thank you sincerely for your kindness and support.
— The Elysian Retreat & Deya-So Vacation Services Team
