About Ellipsis Tree Collective

Ellipsis Tree Collective (ETC) is an Afrocentric theatre company based in Calgary, AB, dedicated to the professional development and production of creative works by BIPOC artists. The only Arts organization of it's kind in Western Canada, ETC has provided performance and mentorship platforms to Artists in multiple disciplines for over a decade. Founded by 5 Black Womxn Artists, ETC was birthed out a necessity to amplify the Black Voice, generating opportunities and providing funding for public performance, education, and charitable initiatives. ETC is run by Artistic Director Janelle Cooper.

ETC's Work

ETC is currently working on a number of new projects that require funding for equipment, supplies, rehearsal/performance/presentation spaces, Artist subsistence, etc.

The Call Out - A web series that examines the lasting and damaging effects of micro-aggressive, fetishized, blatant and institutionalized racism through video interviews and storytelling.

When The Black Shirts Come Off (working title) - A photo series featuring Black Womxn activists in Calgary. When the weight of the community is lifted from our shoulders how do we decompress, commune, rebuild, and find the capacity to create more space to share love and for self-love. We also see The Blacktivist in her many forms: Organizer, Artist, Educator, Mother.

John Ware Reimagined - A play by Cheryl Foggo about Alberta's beloved Black cowboy, John Ware. This work has been ongoing for many years, and we are working towards a touring production of this piece.

ETC's Mental Health Commitment

We are at a critical time in the Black Lives Matter movement, the force of which has reopened hidden scars and suppressed traumas that must be addressed. There is much healing work to be done and ETC is making a commitment to supporting Calgary's Black community through direct financial support for Mental Health Services, and we are currently working on the development of a healing network that includes Black psychotherapists, counsellors, life coaches, and other treatment specialists.

What We're Hoping For

It's time for ACTion! We need to stop talking and start doing. We've spent so much time recycling diplomatic rhetoric. Get messy, get weird, lean into the awkward. It might not be perfect, but at least we're making moves. These are the building blocks, there is no model for this. So let's run blind with good intention and a commitment to change, and accept that pain is a catalyst for necessary transformation in our industry and the World. It's not easy to look at oneself in the mirror and acknowledge the ways in which you've contributed to a system that was designed to marginalize and oppress. This is an opportunity to make amends for that now and be the change you say you want to see. It's time to move forward together.

White supremacy is so pervasive it exists even when there is no white person(s) around to perpetuate it. It is that foundationally ingrained in our policitcal and socio-economic culture. That's why we must always be actively working towards change.

This is a marathon, and we're only just beginning. Thank you for standing with us, running alongside us, fighting for and with us. We're stronger together.
