Elliot is my energetic, rambunctious 8-year-old son who loves having fun and exploring the world around him. He is nonverbal and relies on an AAC device to communicate his needs, feelings, and ideas. Yesterday, his device suddenly stopped working—the screen went completely black and it won’t turn on. This device was provided by insurance years ago and is now out of warranty. Unfortunately, insurance only approves new AAC devices every five years, and we’ve already had many issues with this one. While most problems were covered under warranty, now that it’s expired, the repair and labor costs are overwhelming.

Because Elliot’s current device was funded by insurance, we can’t even transfer the AAC software to another device. Watching Elliot struggle without his voice has been heartbreaking. What I would really love to do is purchase an iPad with AppleCare+ and the AAC software. If we own the software, we can install it on any Apple device, so if something breaks, there’s always a backup available—unlike now, where we’re left with nothing.
