Hey all,
You probably are aware that I recently spent two weeks in the hospital on a crisis hold, and waited the absolute last minute to do this because I thought things would get better on their own.
In October my wife Jez and I packed up our entire lives and made a cross-country move from Georgia to Oregon. As it goes, immediately we were in serious debt after spending almost 16k to fully move our furniture, car and our four pets (one of which was disabled).
The start-up costs for our utilities, insurance, etc hit us right away with start-up fees, many of which we were not able to pay and incurred late fees, some totaling almost $500. We had our electricity cut off twice, and had to depend on the kindness of my family to have it temporarily turned back on. Making it worse, we live on a farm and the irrigation system we have… will often not work while our power is off. They cut our internet, and we haven’t been able to pay it for 2 months.
Last month our car died for good. It had been having problems for a while, but at this point it’s borderline unfixable, and any work done on it would cost more than the value of the car. As we live in a farm, we depend entirely on our car for day to day life. Currently, we are trapped in our home and can’t make it to doctors appointments, pharmacy orders, groceries (sometimes we can hobble the car to our local price-gouged store) and work. I can’t get a job until i have the car, I can’t further my mental health treatment without the car, I’ve basically been cold turkey since I got out of the psych unit. If there were a non-medical emergency we wouldn't have any way to leave our house.
There’s so much more terrible circumstantial stuff but this is the jist of what we need. This money will go towards a semi-reliable car, registration, settling auto insurance, etc. It sounds dramatic, but this car is literally my lifeline right now and anything helps.
I’ve attached photos of some of the worst damage to our car, as well as our previous power bill (thankfully recently settled by the kindness of others) to show how bad our typical bills hit right now. I don't know how we are going to survive this.
Thank you so much, everyone.
Elliot
UPDATE 03/06/2025
Thanks to the amazing generosity we were able to finance a cheap car, I have set the goal lower and the remaining is to help pay off the car, as well as get it's title and registration, which we have not been able to afford yet. As well as fixing a few things the car came with. Thank you so much everyone,,
