It was a bright day in 2013 when Elizabeth Funmilayo Akinsola set out for a job interview with the Nigerian Immigration Office in Abuja — full of hope, dressed neatly, and eager to take another step toward her dreams. But that morning changed everything.

On her way, the bus she boarded was involved in a terrible accident. The bus caught fire, and Elizabeth was flung from the vehicle, becoming the only survivor of the crash. Though her life was spared, her journey since that day has been one of unimaginable pain, endurance, and faith.

Her Journey So Far

After years of medical challenges and multiple surgeries, Elizabeth traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, in 2016 to undergo major reconstructive surgery. Though it brought some progress, her full recovery was never completed.

Today, Elizabeth lives in Sango, Ogun State, Nigeria, with her loving parents and her two children — Raphael (7) and Naomi (5). In 2022, her husband unfortunately left and has not returned, leaving her to care for her children while battling her own medical condition.

Due to her injuries, Elizabeth is unable to walk. She spends most of her days in bed, on strong medications to manage pain, and depends on others to lift her and help with daily tasks.

Despite all this, she continues to hold on to faith and hope — believing that one day, she will walk again.

A Story of Faith and Compassion

Elizabeth’s story reminds us of the woman with the issue of blood (Mark 5:25–34) — who spent all she had seeking healing until one touch from Jesus made her whole. We continue to believe in that same power of God to heal Elizabeth completely.

Her story also echoes that of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37) — someone who chose not to pass by a person in need. Today, you have the opportunity to be that Good Samaritan to Elizabeth.

Our Initial Goal - $12,000

This fundraiser is the first step in helping Elizabeth rebuild her life.

We are currently raising funds to cover:

Basic living expenses, food, and care for Elizabeth and her children

Regular medical and medication costs

Transportation to medical appointments and follow-ups

Consultations, assessments, and medical tests

At this stage, the goal is not to fund her surgeries yet, but to help her stabilize — get the right assessments, meet with specialists, and find out what surgeries/procedures (and associated costs) she needs to prepare for the next phase of her full recovery.

Once a clear medical plan and cost estimates are determined, a future fundraiser will likely be launched as needed to support her surgeries.

This fundraiser is coordinated by a small support team of family and friends who met Elizabeth when she came to the US for medical care in 2016. We are committed to full transparency:

A dedicated account is used for all fundraiser dollar transactions. Funds will be disbursed over time to Elizabeth to cover expenses such as medications, transportation, and consultations.

The goal is to ensure that funds are managed wisely to sustain Elizabeth for at least six months, barring unforeseen circumstances.

Because Go Fund Me does not accept donations in Naira, funds given in Nigerian currency (Naira) will be sent directly to Elizabeth's account. Please see note for how to donate in Naira at end of this story.
