Help Elizabeth Provide Care for Her Father Stephen Lipovsky
Donation protected
My name is Elizabeth Lipovsky and I have been my father’s sole caregiver for the last 5 years. In 2021, he was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment and it has gradually declined. He now has Alzheimer’s/Dementia.
Throughout this journey, I have done everything I can to keep him in his home, assisting with the implementation of an adult day care center, medical appointments, grocery shopping, etc.
I have had very few breaks while working full-time as a teacher.
In June 2025, my father had an episode which required him to be hospitalized. Upon discharge, he was found to have muscle weakness. However, being at the hospital for multiple days, set him back from the start regarding mobility. There was no attempt from staff to get him up or work on his mobility.
At this point, he had to be transferred to Loudoun Nursing and rehab facility. Once at the rehab it took the team a while to determine that he could really walk. It took a while for him to walk, stand, and transfer. I have been in the facility every day since he was placed on June 11. I have worked with him in all areas of his recovery, sometimes in the facility 8 hours a day. If I did not go in the facility as I have, he would not be getting out of bed. These facilities are understaffed and aren’t able to handle people with such cognitive abilities. For example, when I go into the facility I am able to get him up in minutes. Whereas, staff need 2-3 people and sometimes even a hoyer lift.
Now, we are at the point of discharge. His medical needs have changed drastically. He can no longer attend the adult day center he once attended in Leesburg. He needs to attend Insight, in Fairfax County, VA, by his old station where he worked as a police officer.
This comes with additional costs. ADA transport to the facility will be $150 one way, since he is now in a wheelchair for most of the day, and the program fees. Program fees are unknown at this time. I have asked for financial assistance. For his needs, and to attend everyday, they would typically charge around $5,000 a month.
Additionally, he will not be able to attend the facility full-time until he’s back into a routine and has built up additional stamina and strength. He will need in-home care. This is around $300 a day through Homewatch. He has no savings, IRAs, long-term care insurance, nothing. This is to ensure he is safe and cared for while I am at work.
I am hoping that eventually he will be able to transition to the new adult day center 5 days a week, but this is really an unknown, and we need to take it day by day, getting him acclimated back at home.
Discharge is August 10th, and beginning August 11th, he will need in-home care.
I am also hoping that these funds can go towards his daily care. My father is completely incontinent and requires assistance with all activities of daily living: feeding, dressing, bathing, etc.
I have tried every avenue to get help for my father. I am open to other suggestions and non profits to continue to keep him home. He qualifies for the Medicaid Waiver program, however, the spend down is so high, he can’t afford the care, his mortgage, electric, or even food! The program is to keep people in their homes and receive the care where they are most comfortable. This is not happening, and unfathomable to me.
Half of his pension and social security are just not enough to cover the monthly costs of his care at this time. I am hoping that once he is back home, with myself and his puppies, he will be off to a great start in his rehabilitation and recovery. We will also be getting in-home PT and OT to help after discharge.
Please call me to get in touch with my father or speak with me. He does not use a phone.
