Help Elizabeth Buy Her Own French Horn

Hello!

My name is Elizabeth Muñoz, and I am a senior attending Back of The Yards College Prep. I play the French horn and aspire to pursue a career in Music Education. I received the full-ride Questbridge scholarship for my undergraduate degree at Oberlin College and aspire to do a master's in music education here in Chicago. I recently received the news that I am accepted to the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and will hopefully do a dual degree in Horn Performance and Education Studies. I am passionate about horn performance and want to become a music teacher so that I can share my love for music with others.

The instrument I currently play was lent to me by the Merit School of Music when I started playing the horn at Rachel Carson Elementary School. I have been using this instrument ever since because my family doesn't have enough resources to purchase one. I have relied on this horn for performances in juries, recitals, concerts, festivals, and summer music camps. As I prepare for college and beyond, I need to purchase an instrument of my own. The horns at a professional level range from $5,000-$6,500. Additionally, I need instrument accessories like a stopped mute and straight mute that will add up to around $100-$150.

I am currently enrolled in lessons and music classes at the People's Music School, and Merit School of Music. I also have a history with the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative (CMPI). I attended the New England Music Camp in 2023 and the Interlochen Arts Camp in 2024. Some of my musical accomplishments include participating in the ILMEA district band in 2022 and 2023, and the ILMEA All-State Honors Band in 2024.

Music has been my passion since I was little, but becoming a musician is extremely expensive. This financial barrier is especially challenging for people of color entering the classical music industry. The percentage of African American and Latinx musicians in American orchestras is only 7.2%. I aim to increase this number and be part of this representation. I would greatly appreciate any financial assistance to turn my dream into a reality. Your support would mean everything to me, and purchasing an instrument would be incredibly exciting, giving me the chance to accomplish my life goal.
