My wife Leticia and I are on a journey to start a family, but we’ve faced some unexpected challenges along the way. I am a 37-year-old law enforcement officer and army veteran living in southeast Arkansas, and Leticia is a casino promotional manager who recently became an American citizen. After years of trying, we learned that I have testicular failure brought on by late stage maturation arrest, which means I have no sperm in my semen. A testicular biopsy revealed rare spermatids in my testicles, and our doctors explained that the only way for us to conceive is through ICSE followed by rounds of IVF. We have taken a home equity loan to cover most of the expenses, but the costs of medical treatments and embryo storage are more than we can manage alone.
