Hey, I’m Aélis . I’m 29 and I’m a non-binary person living in Glasgow, UK.

 

In the UK, we’re fortunate to have the NHS, but the NHS waiting times for gender-affirming health care are pretty rough. The average waiting time for the first appointment with a Gender Identity Clinic is anywhere between 3-5 years and at least another 8-10 years after that before being able to get surgery. Because of this, I’ve made the decision to go privately which obviously comes with much higher costs.

 

Basically, I need to get top surgery. I’ve been dysphoric about my chest for as long as I can remember. Using cheap ways of binding and eventually encouraging extreme weight-loss in the form of my eating disorder all to achieve a feeling of home within my body and gender affirmation. It is at the point where I now struggling with feelings of dysphoria, depression and rapid weight-loss at a constant and have lost sense of myself through this process.

 

Getting top surgery (and other gender affirming care + therapy support) with this fund will finally allow me to feel normal in a body that has never felt safe or mine. It means that I’ll be able to enjoy my life without feelings of body related trauma and disconnect to myself. It would mean the world for my mental health, psychical health and love for self.

 

I understand we’re in a weird time and not everyone has money to give, so there’s absolutely no pressure to donate. If all you can do is share then that in itself is amazing.
