Last year, Elisabeth was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm and has gone through multiple brain surgeries since her diagnosis.

This has obviously had an impact on her income and ability to continue in her career, and she’s been doing her best to stay afloat. However, the rising costs of housing (as well as medical expenses and everything else) forced her to seek assistance. But it wasn’t enough, and on the afternoon of July 3, right before the holiday weekend, a sign was posted on her door without warning that if she does not vacate by July 9, the sheriff will come to remove her and take her pet to a shelter. It also stated that she needed to pay $21,000 in rent to avoid eviction.

Elisabeth first received eviction paperwork in April 2025, days after getting out of the hospital for two surgeries to repair damage from three previous brain surgeries. She informed the landlord at that time she was working with NW Justice Project to access disability services and that her intention was to pay and stay in her home. After filing the necessary paperwork, she was told by NW Justice Project to watch her mail for a court date, but that this could take up to a year. No notice of a court date arrived.

On the afternoon of July 3, she was informed for the first time in the eviction notice of a court date that took place on May 21 that she had “missed.” She wasn’t sent this court date or any reminders by mail. Since she communicated with her landlord in April, no steps were taken to notify her of actions she needed to take. Instead, the landlord escalated to an eviction notice the afternoon of July 3rd for Elisabeth to vacate by July 9th.

Elisabeth called and emailed NW Justice Project only to find their phone lines are out of service, receiving an email that they can’t help with her case because of funding cuts.

So much is precarious for so many people right now, especially in the wake of the federal legislation that was passed on July 3. Elisabeth’s story is an example of this political moment in which many people are choosing cruelty over compassion. It’s also our story; this could happen to any of us.

We’re not assuming we can raise the full $21,000 by July 9, but we’re hopeful that we are making substantial enough consistent progress to convince a judge to stop the eviction at this time.
