Help Eli's Sick Kids Journey

Donation protected
Hi, I am Jamie, Eli's Grandmother's friend. Here's a message from Janis Stone, Eli's Grandmother. (Eli's mom is Laura Bonney)

I’d be grateful for all your good vibes and thoughts for my 10 year old grandson, Eli.

On Friday, June 27th, my daughter and I took Eli to the Orillia ER department with significant head swelling and pain, with no history of injury or sickness. After a bloodwork and a head CT, it was found that he has a massive mastoid bone infection that has infiltrated his skull and has several abscesses on his brain. They sent him via ambulance to Sick Kids Hospital, in Toronto, in the middle of the night.

On Saturday, he had an MRI and then his first surgery with ENT to start draining some of the infection and was started on three different IV antibiotics. On Sunday, the neuro surgery team gathered to decide on next steps. He will need a PICC line in the next few days, as they think he will need at least 6 weeks of antibiotics.

I remain hopeful for a complete recovery but I think it’s going to be a difficult and painful next couple of months. My daughter has another little son Sam, who is very worried at home.

As of July 2nd, Eli is doing well, still admitted to Sick Kids but is pain free and feeling much better all around. They will probably stay for another week if his condition remains the same. He’s looking at another 6 weeks of antibiotics, so will be getting a PICC line (more permanent IV) this week and a repeat MRI to assess the infection. He will go home with homecare nursing for his antibiotics.

Please know how much I appreciate your collective voices and thoughts for Eli and family. They still have a way to go navigating the rest of the hospital stay and all the financial strain that represents, a sibling that is busy and needs consideration too and just the severity of his condition and all the emotional ups and downs that brings. Please continue to keep them in your thoughts.

Your help would be used for lost wages, any hotel stays, gas money for the 2 hour drive back and forth from home to the hospital, parking fees, and food in Toronto. In addition, any necessary child care needs when he returns home, as he won't be able to go to camp, swim, and his activities will be limited.
