Our dear friend and fellow conservationist Elijah Thompson needs us right now. With her permission, I am sharing what happened. Elijah was hit by a car on May 22nd. Her leg is broken badly and they performed surgery to help fix it. She is still in the hospital recovering and is very shaken up, understandably. The person who hit her hit three parked cars and Elijah. Elijah had to jump out of the way to save herself from being pinned between her truck and the person's car.
Elijah was set to start a new herpetology job that she was incredibly excited about next week. Her house is packed, and she was planning to move this very weekend. Instead of planning to meet her to help move her in tomorrow, I am writing this. Not only is she now dealing with a broken leg, lots of pain, the trauma of how terrifying the accident was, and recovering from surgery- she is navigating all of this in the middle of what was supposed to be a big beautiful life transition that is now up in the air. The timing of all of this adds another terrible layer of tragedy.
Those who know Elijah are lucky to know a brilliant, kind, curious, hilarious, gentle person who deserves nothing but love and support. She is generous, fiercely loyal, and dedicates her entire self to helping conserve our beautiful planet. There aren't many people in the world who have a heart like Elijah's.
Anything you can donate will go directly to Elijah. She will likely have to sue the person who hit her in order to cover things like basic living costs from her lost wages, etc. As we all know, these processes can be long, exhausting, and unpredictable. Anything given now will help her with the immediate out of pocket costs of simply living and dealing with something like this- as she takes time to figure out how and when she can get back to work, where she will live now, etc.
Thank you for being here. I will add updates as I can.
If you prefer to donate via Venmo, send them to @kabrynmattison and I will get them directly to her. There are no fees taken out of Venmo donations, 3% taken from gofundme donations.
