About a year and a half ago, Elida Guzman began experiencing the first symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. It started with numbness in the ring and middle fingers of her right hand, but over time the symptoms spread to both hands. What began as a tingling sensation gradually turned into burning, then constant pain, and eventually a significant loss of strength in her hands.

Today, this condition makes it difficult for her to carry out many of the most basic daily activities. Simple tasks like washing dishes, sweeping, or even holding a knife have become very difficult. Because of the pain and weakness in her hands, Elida has also had to stop playing the organ at church, something she has not been able to do for the past year.

Doctors have recommended surgery to treat the nerve damage. The procedure itself is relatively brief, taking about 20 to 30 minutes per hand, but it must be done on both hands. One hand will be operated on first, and once it has healed, the surgery will be performed on the other. If the surgery is not done soon, the nerve damage will continue to progress and recovery will become more difficult.

The full recovery process is expected to take between one and two months. The total cost of the surgeries for both hands is approximately 3,000 Belize dollars (about $1,500 USD), in addition to transportation costs and post-surgery follow-up appointments.

Elida is part of a large family. Seven people live in her household, including her father, who suffered a stroke six years ago and depends on her care. She also has four daughters: two of them, 23-year-old twins, work to help with household expenses while paying off their student loans; another daughter, who is 18, takes care of many of the household tasks that have become difficult for Elida and is preparing to begin university this coming September; and the youngest is 12 years old and finishing primary school. In addition, two nephews are currently living with them after her husband’s brother and his two sons were involved in a serious car accident two months ago and are still recovering.

Because of all these family responsibilities, covering the cost of the surgery has been very difficult for the family at this time. For this reason, we are seeking the support of those who would like to help Elida receive the treatment she needs.

Los médicos han recomendado una cirugía para tratar el daño en los nervios. El procedimiento es relativamente breve, de aproximadamente 20 a 30 minutos por mano, pero debe realizarse en ambas manos. Primero se operará una mano y, después de que haya sanado, se realizará la cirugía en la otra. Si la operación no se realiza pronto, el daño en el nervio avanzaría y la recuperación sería más difícil.

Elida forma parte de una familia grande. En su hogar viven siete personas, incluyendo a su padre, quien sufrió un derrame cerebral hace seis años y depende de su cuidado. También tiene cuatro hijas: dos de ellas, gemelas de 23 años, trabajan para ayudar con los gastos del hogar mientras pagan sus préstamos estudiantiles; otra hija de 18 años es quien se encarga de muchas de las tareas del hogar que a Elida ahora se le dificultan y está en espera de comenzar la universidad en septiembre; y la menor tiene 12 años y está terminando la escuela primaria. Además, actualmente viven con ellos dos sobrinos, después de que el hermano de su esposo y sus dos hijos sufrieran un grave accidente automovilístico hace dos meses y aún están en recuperación.

Debido a todas estas responsabilidades familiares, reunir los recursos para la cirugía ha sido muy difícil para la familia en este momento. Por eso estamos buscando el apoyo de quienes deseen ayudar a Elida a recibir el tratamiento que necesita.
