Help Eli Replace His Car

Donation protected
My name is Mikaela and I live in Richmond, VA. On Saturday, June 23rd I received the unfortunate call that my boyfriend, Eli, had wrecked his car. He was turning into a one-way intersection with obscured visibility as a Ford van had illegally parked at the corner. Thinking to the best of his knowledge that the coast was clear, he made the turn only to be t-boned by a speeding Hyundai sudan, flipping his Jeep Cherokee driver’s side-first into the pavement. His front air bags didn’t deploy. By some miracle he managed to climb out of his car with only a sore shoulder, but his car was effectively totaled. Unfortunately, due to traffic laws he is legally at fault though the odds were stacked against him. This means he has to appear in court next month though he is going to try and contest it.

To make a long story short, Eli is in need of a new used car. As of now his only options to get to and from his job are to share my car (our work schedules don’t align) or Lyft/Uber to work (typically $15 one way – it adds up quickly; he also doesn’t own a smart phone with data), as there is no public transportation on this end of town. Not only does this make it incredibly inconvenient to get to work, but it renders both of us at a major inconvenience as I need to have my car available for him as much as possible to mitigate costs.

Eli’s insurance payout totaled to $2470, which is a good start but still not ideal. In order to get him a more reliable car, we are looking to spend, at minimum, somewhere in the range of 3-5k. It is nigh-impossible to find a car for under $3,000 that will reliably get him to work for years to come without heavy maintenance up front. At minimum, raising a few thousand dollars will allow him to start looking cars in the semi-reliable range and also cover any fines in the event he is found guilty at court.

Eli is heartbroken over losing his car. He also never asks anyone for anything. However, a car is necessary on this end of town and he cannot continue to improve his situation (such as getting a second job) until he has a reliable vehicle to get to and from work. Whether it be $1 or $100, any amount is appreciated, and I’m sure he would offer favors to anyone willing to help him out. :)
