This is Eli. He is autistic, has an intellectual disability, and suffered a traumatic brain injury. His baseline functioning is that of a five-year-old, but in his heart, he’s always believed he is a Police Officer. Eli’s world is filled with heroes—he sees himself as a Power Ranger, an Agent of the Law, and even best friends with Tony Stark, who is Ironman. These dreams bring him joy and purpose every day.

Recently, Eli was legally charged with impersonating a police officer. This is a very serious charge, brought by a small town’s police department and prosecuting attorney. As his mom, I am devastated. I’ve been told that hiring an attorney for Eli will be very expensive. As a single mom currently in a wheelchair, I simply don’t have the resources to help my son on my own. A felony conviction could take away the services Eli relies on now and will need for the rest of his life. I cannot let this injustice stand.
