Help Elena's Shelter for Abandoned Cats in Ukraine

Imagine living in a country that is under daily bombardment that can hit anytime and anywhere. The people of Ukraine have been living with this nightmare for over three years. What courage and determination does it take to not run abroad, but to stay and take care of abandoned animals that have no one else?

I have known Elena Taran for a long time. She has been quietly rescuing and caring for stray and abandoned cats in Kherson for years prior to the war. Then came the Russian invasion and occupation of Kherson, which is in the south of Ukraine. Many people fled and dumped their pets. It was left to those who stayed behind, like Elena, to care for them – feed, treat, rescue.

After a few months, the city of Kherson was liberated, but the Russians didn’t go far. They are still shelling the city from the opposite side of the Dnipro River. After several missiles hit near the building where Elena lived, she had no choice but to evacuate her shelter to Kyiv. 134 cats and a dog were evacuated.

The shelter continues to accept animals even after the evacuation. Now Elena has to rent space where more than 90 cats are housed, fed, cared for, and loved. All of them are sterilized and vaccinated. For many cats, the shelter has become a permanent home. All the animals receive attention, love, treatment if needed, and Elena also tries to find suitable families for her charges. Cats that have been traumatized by the stress and hardships of war need special treatment, which can be very costly. In addition, the shelter has other expenses, like rent, utilities, repairs, and supplies.
