In May 2025, Elena was in a bike accident that caused her to go over the handlebars and land face-first on the pavement. She was alone at the time of the crash, and the impact caused severe injuries to her mouth and teeth. Her front teeth were badly damaged, one tooth broke all the way to the top and exposed the nerve, and her two front teeth were pushed backward and became loose. She also injured her chin and split her lips, which later became infected and inflamed for weeks. After being taken to the hospital, Elena was sent home with pain medication because doctors could not perform dental treatment right away. She had to make it through the night in intense pain before seeing a specialist the next afternoon.

The following day, Elena underwent emergency dental surgery. One tooth had to be removed, her two damaged front teeth were repositioned and stabilized with braces, and she had a bone graft in preparation for a future implant. Two months later, she had root canals on her two front teeth. After the braces were removed, temporary teeth were placed while her permanent crowns were being prepared, but the process remained physically and emotionally exhausting. Even after receiving crowns, Elena has been living with the gap from her missing tooth for the past eight months. She had a removable prosthetic, but it was often uncomfortable, and after the implant screw was placed recently, it no longer fit. Right now, she has no way to cover the gap, which has made an already difficult recovery even harder.

Over the past year, Elena has drained her savings trying to cover the cost of these procedures while working full-time after graduating college.
