Help elect Richard Terry to Cork County Council

I’m Richard Terry, the Social Democrats Local Election Candidate for Carrigaline.

I live in Passage West where I’m taking a year out from teaching to be a stay-at-home dad to my young daughter.

I have 13 years experience in secondary education. As a teacher, teaching Maths, History and Applied Maths; as a member of my school’s board of management; and as a committed trade unionist.

That broad experience, of science, of the humanities, of community, of activism, of parenthood, has left me with a particular set of skills, and perspectives on how local government can help improve the quality of life of people. I believe in finding sensible, evidence driven solutions to our community’s problems.

I believe local government can do better for the people of the Carrigaline LEA.

Often forgotten beneath the cut and thrust of national politics, local government has the capacity to profoundly influence our quality of life. And it often does, but there is more that Cork County Council can do.

We all know of houses in our locality that lie vacant or are derelict. Houses that could be homes. The council has the power to push those houses back into use.

Childcare is a source of immense stress for parents – cost, competition for places, the risk of creches closing, or not offering places to children on the Early Childhood Care and Education Scheme. Reliable childcare would lift a burden off the parents of our area.

We need more public spaces, ‘third places’ that are neither home nor work. Places and activities for the young and old, and all in between, to go and socialise as a community, day and night.

My focus, if elected, will be on issues like these that directly affect the quality of life of the people of Cork.
