Help Elect Cian Mac Aonghusa to DLR County Council

Donation protected
I’m delighted to announce that I’ve been nominated by People Before Profit to run in the Blackrock LEA in the upcoming local elections. Blackrock is a vibrant town and a lovely community. I have been a longtime activist in Dún Laoghaire and Blackrock building campaigns for more public and affordable housing. I have also played a leading role in the Student Climate Strike movement as well as the campaign to Repeal the Eighth Amendment.

Unfortunately, Blackrock and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown are bearing the brunt of the worst housing crisis in the history of the state. Average rent in DLRCOCO is now at a shocking €2,400 a month. In Blackrock, it is even more egregious with 1 bedroom apartments on the rental market for €2,500 a month. As a young person, most of my generation are being locked out of a future in this country because of unaffordable rents and house prices. Ordinary people and families of all ages are under immense pressure to keep a roof over their heads. When a landlord sells or decides to take a property off the market, tenants face the impossible task of trying to find an affordable home.

If elected, tackling the housing crisis will be my top priority as councillor.
I will demand that the council:
  • Issue Compulsory Purchase Orders on buildings and sites that have been left vacant without a valid reason - there are over 166,000 vacant homes in the country.
  • Increase the proportion of homes that the council mandates to be social and affordable from 10% to 50% - Currently, only 91 affordable homes will go on the market in the Dún Laoghaire constituency from now until 2026.
  • Redefine affordable homes so it is based on average incomes and not a percentage of market value.
  • Call on the government to accelerate the construction of public and affordable housing on council-owned land.
  • Recruit more tradespeople to work to renovate and maintain council houses.

Finally, I will continue to work with other housing activists to build a mass movement for public and affordable housing so young and working people are not forced to leave the country.

What will my donation be used for?
This GoFundME will be used to fund Cian's election campaign. It will go to pay for the day-to-day things like leaflets, posters and zip-ties, and banners.
