I met this wonderful couple about two years ago, and we quickly became good friends. They are both 74 years old and have always worked hard to support themselves, relying on the income from a small rental property. In September 2024, they rented out their carriage house, hoping it would provide some extra security in their retirement. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse when their new tenant stopped paying rent almost immediately. What followed was an incredibly difficult 18 months. Despite their best efforts, the tenant refused to leave, forcing my friends to hire an attorney and attend numerous court appearances—all while receiving no rental income. They used up every bit of their savings, maxed out their credit cards, and even borrowed from friends just to keep up with the mounting bills. The financial strain was overwhelming, and the emotional toll was just as severe. The cost of the legal battle and lost income has been devastating. To make matters worse, the tenant finally left suddenly in the early morning hours, leaving behind significant damage to the property. My friends had to change the locks, repaint, repair broken glass, replace doors, bathroom cabinets, recarpet the space, and now must also replace damaged kitchen cabinets and destroyed counter tops, using the last of their available credit. The stress of this ordeal has been immense. Both are now seeking therapy, and the husband was recently hospitalized after suffering a stroke. They are doing everything they can to recover, but they are close to losing their home and are truly at the end of their resources. The funds raised will go directly toward paying off the huge attorney bills, maxed-out credit cards, and repaying the friends who have already helped them. Most importantly, it will give them an chance to regain some stability and hope after such a devastating experience. Any support—whether through a donation or by sharing this fundraiser—will make a world of difference for them. Thank you for taking the time to read their story and for considering a contribution to help them rebuild their lives.
