Hello my name is Elayah, I was born at 26 weeks, I was 1 lb. 7 oz. at birth; as a result of my brain injuries sustained at birth from prematurity I was diagnosed with Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy at the age of one.. I have had continuous PT, OT, and ST since I was 8 months ( only 4 months gestational), in efforts to prepare me for life and to eventually have a procedure call SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy) at the St. Louis Childrens hospital. The procedure is available for qualifying ages 4-50 but, only eligible for referral by PCP ages 4-7, this age also decrease the risk of other health issues. Selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) is a type of neurosurgical procedure used to treat spasticity. Spasticity is a condition in which muscles contract uncontrollably and remain tight. It results in pain and decreased range of movement in the arms and legs. I am supported by my family who has worked so hard to provide for me and give me the most in life however, we cannot afford to pay for my surgery and other states do not accept my insurance. This surgery can change my life, and afford me with many qualities in which I do not have right now such as, things as simple as walking which is one of my biggest dreams. Previously I was blessed with the opportunity to have a spot for the completion of the surgery in June 2020 however, June 13, 2020 I had a shunt malfunction, I had to get surgery so I was set back again; also at that time it was not made clear that I would not be able to utilize my insurance. However, now I have been given an another chance to undergo surgery in 2022 and I am now healthy enough for the operation but we cannot afford to pay, this is my last year to be eligible for referral because, I am now 7 years of age please assist my family in funding.
