In early 2020, Elaine Birnbaum underwent gastric bypass surgery to alleviate concerns relating to digestion and chronic pain. Following what everyone thought was a successful surgery, Elaine and her family were dealt the horrifying news that she has stage 4 pancreatic cancer with some evidence of gastric stomach cancer. Since it had spread into the stomach walls it is difficult to determine what the primary source is. She is currently being treated with chemotherapy for both pancreatic and gastric stomach cancer. Elaine did not qualify for any clinical trials at the time, but a treatment plan was mapped out with a medical team as they continued to search for the source of this mysterious cancer. After months of chemotherapy, Doctors are still not sure of where this cancer originated from and Elaine and her family remain committed to supporting her in her fight as she undergoes regular treatments. They are also focused on supporting further research to not only help Doctors support her treatment, but also to support research on this rare, mysterious type of stomach cancer.
Elaine has provided tissue samples to Foundation Medicine, a team of Physicians and Researchers based out of Massachusetts who are engaged in the fight against cancer. Foundation Medicine believes that the more we know about cancer’s molecular underpinnings, the better we can help physicians make the best treatment decisions for their patients.

Every cancer is unique and they are committed to providing specific genomic insights into the specific type of cancer to help doctors guide a personalized care plan. Their approach offers not just test results, but the highest quality insights that can help doctors match patients to more treatment options and help accelerate the development of new therapies.
There are significant costs associated with this research, treatment and care that will hopefully improve Elaine’s quality of life and help Doctors better understand the source and cause of this cancer. Please help in our efforts to deal with the costs associated with Elaine’s treatment and the research that could help her and many others who might suffer from this mysterious type of stomach cancer.
Any unused funds after treatment, care, genetic testing and therapies will be donated to the Baruch Weisz Cancer Centre at North York General Hospital.
