If you’re part of San Diego’s music and dance community, chances are you already know El Duke (Steve Allen) — or you’ve felt his impact. You may have heard him play or sing with one of the many groups he’s been part of, danced to his rhythms at an event, taken a Brazilian or Afro-Cuban percussion class with him, or drummed alongside him at a workshop. For years, Duke has given his time, talent, and heart to this community, especially through his work with Super Sonic Samba School and other local groups.

Recently, Duke has faced multiple surgeries and, on top of that, lost his only means of transportation. This has made it incredibly difficult for him to continue teaching, performing, and sharing music with the community he loves. We’re raising funds to help him purchase a used van that will be big enough for him to get in and out of easily due to his disabilities, and roomy enough to safely transport his instruments. Having reliable transportation will allow Duke to travel to different parts of the city, especially low-income areas, to give lessons to underage children in schools and community centers.
