About a month ago, my world turned upside down when Ekko, my loyal partner and working dog, was exposed to a Sago palm—a highly toxic plant that came with the new house we just moved into. Sago palms are especially dangerous because they attack the liver, and now Ekko is showing signs of mild liver failure. Her liver levels have been all over the place, and to make things even harder, she’s developed fluid leaking into her abdomen. Her veterinarians are at a standstill and at a loss for what to do next, which makes this situation even more difficult and heartbreaking. That’s why I’m reaching out for help and why Ekko has to retire from the work she loves so much.

Ekko isn’t just a pet—she’s a protector. She’s spent her life keeping local schools safe from threats like bombs and school shootings, and she’s brought smiles to so many children. Her work has been truly vital, and she’s always given her all, both to her job and to me. Even now, while she’s sick, her drive to work is still there, and that’s what keeps me going. On my vet’s advice, she’s being placed into retirement so we can focus on her comfort and health. It’s one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, but Ekko’s well-being comes first. If I can give her more time and a better quality of life, I will do everything I can.

The costs for her care—diagnostics, bloodwork, imaging, medications, and ongoing treatment—are rising quickly as we search for answers and try to manage her condition.
