E.G.M. came to Washington seeking safety and a new beginning, working legally at our shared employer while pursuing asylum from his home country due to political unrest and his belief in democracy. Despite the challenges of navigating a complex legal system in a new language, he attended two asylum hearings on his own and was told he needed an attorney for his final approval. In a desperate search for legal help, E.G.M. found someone he believed to be a legitimate attorney. This individual misled him, telling E.G.M. that he did not need to attend his final hearing and that his presence was not required. After the hearing, the attorney informed E.G.M. that everything had gone well and that his asylum had been granted. Trusting this, E.G.M. continued with his immigration process, only to later discover that, in his absence, an order of removal had actually been issued at the hearing. It was only after his detention that we learned the truth about the fraudulent attorney, who had impersonated an attorney general and provided false information at every step. Since then, E.G.M. has been held at the ICE processing center in Tacoma, WA, separated from the life he was working so hard to build. People who come to the United States seeking asylum are not starting from a place of safety—they are starting from survival. Many arrive after experiencing loss, fear, or trauma, and must immediately navigate complex legal processes in a language they struggle to understand. Language barriers create isolation, making it harder to ask questions, recognize misinformation, and advocate for oneself. Vulnerability should never determine someone's fate. With this GoFundMe, we hope to help E.G.M. continue the process that was already set in motion before he was taken advantage of. We are working with a reputable law firm to expedite a motion to reopen his case and file an emergency stay order. Unfortunately, these proceedings are costly, and we have been quoted significant legal fees to move forward. At the heart of this fundraiser is not paperwork, policy, or politics—it is a person. A person who wakes up every day not knowing what will happen next, separated from the life he was trying to build. No one should face that kind of uncertainty alone. With your help, we can remind E.G.M. that he is seen, valued, and not forgotten. This is not about asking for sympathy—it is about offering solidarity and standing beside someone who came here seeking safety and now needs support to be treated with fairness and dignity. Every contribution, no matter the size, is a reminder that compassion still exists.
