Hello. I’m writing with the consent and on behalf of my friend EG, who’s in a really rough place right now.
EG hasn’t had full-time employment in almost 3.5 years, though in this hyper-competitive/AI-rising job market and after 600+ job applications submitted it’s certainly not for lack of trying.
Since her last FT job, EG--a deeply experienced and talented communications/marketing writer and editor--has been able to secure some freelance work. However, her client, who falls under the DEI umbrella (meaning the state has slashed their funding) and with whom EG has been working since November 2023, recently cut her monthly rate by 50% and, on October 1, informed her that she would be cut from the project completely in a few weeks’ time. This will leave EG with no income and with no access to unemployment benefits given her status as a freelancer.
Also in the past three years, EG has lost the woman who raised her to dementia and a dear friend to suicide. In addition, she was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, adding to life’s difficulties.
As a result of the above, EG has experienced housing insecurity since 2024, staying in Airbnbs. This month, after a second-round job interview that left her quite confident she would advance, she extended her current Airbnb stay to the end of October. But unfortunately she did not advance and is now in urgent need of money to cover the rest of her Airbnb stay. Beyond that, if she doesn’t generate new income ASAP, she will probably be out on the street.
The fundraising goal of this GoFundMe looks to cover the cost of EG’s Airbnb through October, plus an additional month of housing and basic living necessities to get her through this tenuous time. All funds raised are routed directly to EG’s account. Additionally, please be in touch with any leads on writing/editing jobs (permanent and/or freelance) that EG might pursue.
In EG’s words, “I realize this is a truly challenging time for most folks and I don't wish to be a burden to anyone. I've just reached the end of my rope, which is already frayed. I am in desperate need of a lifeline. I thank you in advance for whatever you can do—any and everything would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you in advance for your empathy and generosity.”
