For the last three months, I’ve been working part-time with an immigrant services nonprofit that provides workforce development to new arrivals (IFSI). It’s a phenomenal organization—on the frontlines, supporting immigrants at a moment when our country has turned their back on them.
Every week I see stories that break your heart—people who are one small act of kindness away from moving from crisis to stability, from uncertainty to independence.
This week, I met Edwige.
Edwige is a new arrival from Haiti who commutes two buses each way from rural Holbrook to Boston so she can attend our Nursing Assistant training program. Her English is excellent, and when she first arrived, she quickly found work with Amazon. But due to a paperwork miscommunication, her employment was terminated in May. Since then, she has survived only through the generosity of friends and family.
Here’s the heartbreaking part:
She is one exam away from becoming a certified nursing assistant.
She cannot pay the $100 fee to keep her work authorization valid.
Her cell phone has been shut off, with a balance of $475, cutting her off from job opportunities and essential communication.
She is so close to achieving stability and self-reliance—but these immediate financial barriers threaten to stop her progress in its tracks.
I’ve already contributed the first $100 to cover her asylum application fee. I’m asking you to join me in bridging this gap—help us restore her phone service, secure her work authorization, and give her the final push she needs to step into a career in healthcare.
If you believe, as I do, that one of America’s greatest strengths is the hope and determination of its immigrants, please consider supporting Edwige. Your kindness today can change the entire course of her future.
