Hello, my name is Grace George Khartoum, a South Sudanese refugee who recently moved to the United States from Dadaab Refugee Camp, Kenya, in January 2025 to pursue higher education on a scholarship. I am deeply grateful for this life-changing opportunity.

But while I begin this new chapter, my heart remains with my family, especially my two younger sisters; Miriam Nyagoa and Mitchel Nyaduop, ages 18 and 16, who are still in the refugee camp and at risk of dropping out of school due to lack of funds. It's been difficult finding a job while taking college classes and adapting to a new environment. I’m asking for your support to help my sisters stay in school.

Why This Matters

My elder sister, Miriam Nyagoa, is currently in her senior year of high school. She is a kind and determined young woman who has always dreamed of studying medicine and becoming a doctor. My younger sister, Mitchel Nyaduop, is an aspiring neurosurgeon. Her academic performance has been outstanding, and her dedication and hard work have continually inspired me as her older sister.

In refugee settings, education is often the only pathway to a better future, especially for girls. Without it, they face heightened risks of early marriage, exploitation, and poverty. Both of my sisters have come a long way in their academic journeys, but now they are at risk of losing that opportunity.

Our situation has worsened due to my father's ongoing medical challenges. While some relatives stepped in to help support my mother and siblings, they unfortunately lost their jobs two months ago. This has placed the full responsibility of providing for my mother and five siblings on my shoulders.

We are now in urgent need of financial support to keep my sisters in school. If my siblings complete high school and are able to get a scholarship, it would be a life-changing opportunity, not only for them, but for our entire family. I firmly believe that with access to quality and consistent education, they can achieve their dreams of becoming a doctor and a neurosurgeon.
